Essentially a percussion piece for any set of three instruments or three groups, The Sum of Moving Parts is an exploration of externally determined structure with indeterminate pitch. Each instrumentalist is assigned a colour, each colour is assigned a number of “hits” (1, 2, or3). When their colour collides with another colour, they play their assigned number of hits. When all three colours collide, all instrumentalists sustain a note or roll for two seconds.
The chaotic pendulum was programmed by Janus Fouché, and is an hommage to one of my favourite process based works, Pendulum Music, by Steve Reich.
