Pulse

Feedback Loop for String Quartet and Contact Microphones

Pulse included this piece in their event titled Hydra, which focused on works including feedback as a central element. In Feedback Loop he sound of each instrument is amplified through the body of the next instrument, eventually causing the closed loop to feed back. Added to this carefully controlled feedback is a series of notes, written in the score, for each musician and one person on electronics. Here is an excerpt from the score:

A computer running Ableton Live and an audio interface with 4 inputs and 4 outputs will be required.

A contact mic is connected to each input (1-4). A transducer speaker is connected to each output (1-4). Mic 1 and speaker 1 attach to the body of violin 1, mic 2 and speaker 2 to violin 2, etc.

Speakers should be attached close to the bridge if possible, microphone position can be where ever is comfortable for the player.

The sound of each instrument runs through a reverb, then to the next instrument in this order: violin 1 -> violin 2 -> viola -> cello -> violin1. Routed in parallel to each output is a synthesiser with the ability to morph gradually from pure sine to square wave.
